Termite Inspections 101

Whether you’re keeping your home in tip-top shape or prepping a home for sale, termite inspections are a must.

Termites are called “the silent destroyer” because they can cause significant structural damage to homes and businesses, and the occupants may never know until it’s too late.

Tennessee is in a high-risk zone for termites. There is an average of 13-15 termite colonies per acre in Tennessee, and termites can forage up to 300 feet in search of food.

Termites feed on cellulose, which includes structural timbers, flooring, doors, door frames, window trims and even drywall and furniture. These pests cause billions in structural damage each year.

Ark Pest Control & Prevention offers residential and commercial termite inspections, reports and treatments. We also work with realtors.

How can you prepare for a termite inspection, and what can you expect?

First of all, make it easy for our technicians to inspect your property. If you have items stored under your sinks, move those out of the way. Make it easy to access the attic, and move items in the garage a few feet out from the wall, too.

We also advise you to trim any bushes that hide the exterior of your building or the foundation. If your property has a crawl space, please make it easy for us to access that area, too.

During the inspection, our team members will spend a while reviewing your property, including walls, baseboards, windows, door frames, cabinets and closets. Inspectors will look for evidence of termites, including broken wings, mud tubes, bubbling paint, damaged wood and termite droppings.

From there, our team will advise you on the next steps to take to keep your home or property safe from these silent destroyers.

What can you do to prevent termites? There are several easy steps you can take. Repair any leaky faucets so termites aren’t attracted to the water. Don’t keep firewood near your home’s exterior, and if any of your wooden beams become exposed, repair them quickly. Don’t keep any cardboard around – termites love to munch on cardboard. Get your home or business inspected for termites every year.
