Sneaky mice, rats and other rodents are looking for a warm place to call home during these winter months. Have they moved in with you?
Rodents are looking for shelter, food and water – and perhaps a place to nest – when temperatures drop. They can squeeze through impossibly small holes or cracks in homes and businesses. Easy access to food – whether it’s garbage left out, improper food storage or a messy kitchen – encourages rodents to stay.
Rats and mice can spread diseases and bacteria, making a major infestation potentially deadly. Mice breed quickly, so a few mice can turn into dozens in a few months. Rodents can cause major damage to your home, too, by chewing through wood, insulation and electrical wiring, which can pose a fire risk.
Unless you see a mouse scurrying around, you may not know you have an infestation. Here are a few signs of rodents in your home:
- Rodent droppings, especially under the sink, in drawers or cupboards, or around food packages
- Shredded paper, insulation or fabric, which they use to make nests
- Gnawed food containers, furniture or plastic
- Gnawing, scratching and squeaking sounds in the walls or attic, especially at night
- Musky odors
