Traveling Soon? Look Out for Bed Bugs

The summer season is upon us, and more families are planning to travel this summer as the country opens up from COVID lockdowns.

Don’t let bed bugs ruin your perfect summer vacation! These pesky pests are annoying at best, but dangerous at worst. Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown bugs that hide during the day and come out at night to munch on whoever is in the bed with them.

Bed bug bites can’t transmit diseases to humans, but their bites are painful and itchy. Some people may develop more serious symptoms from bed bug bites like blisters, a fever and an irregular heartbeat. Of course, knowing your bed is infested with bugs won’t give you a good night’s sleep. And if your bites get infected, that can lead to even more health problems.

When you travel this summer, be sure to inspect the bedding at your vacation rental. These bugs are small and may be hard to find, so look carefully, especially in the seams of mattresses or inside box springs. You may not even see them, but may wake up the next morning with bites along your legs, arms and neck – any skin that is exposed while sleeping. You may also find small blood stains on your bedding, dark spots of bug excrement and a offensive odor from the bug’s scent glands.

Bed bugs also like to hide in carpets, bedding, furniture and baseboards. These insects can hide in the tiniest of places.

Upon returning home, vacuum your suitcase, purse and any other items that were close to your bed. Bed bugs are usually transported home this way. They breed quickly, and in just a few months, you could have more than 10,000 bed bugs.
